SUBJECTS OF THE TEST
The Test will be held in the subjects as given under:
1. Chemical Sciences,
2. Earth Sciences
3. Life Sciences
4. Mathematical Sciences
5. Physical Sciences

SYLLABUS OF THE TEST
 The question paper shall be divided into three parts, (A,B & C) as per syllabus & Scheme of Exam.
# Part 'A' shall be common to all subjects. This part shall contain questions pertaining to General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis and Research Aptitude.
# Part 'B' shall contain subject-related conventional Multiple Choice questions (MCQs), generally covering the topics given in the syllabus.
# Part 'C' shall contain higher value questions that may test the candidate's knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. The questions shall be of analytical nature where a candidate is expected to apply the scientific knowledge to arrive at the solution to the given scientific problem.
# A negative marking for wrong answers, wherever required, shall be applicable as per scheme of Exam.

Syllabus & Scheme of Exam of single Paper is given in the Information Bulletin for this test at Annexure „A‟ and may also be seen at CSIR website: www.csirhrdg.res.in.

EXAMINATION CENTRES
The test will be held at 26 Centres spread all over India, as specified below:
Bangalore, Bhavnagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Guntur, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Jamshedpur, Karaikudi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Pilani, Pune, Raipur Roorkee, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Udaipur and Varanasi.

About University Grants Commission (UGC)
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is a legislative organization which was set up in 1956 by the Union government in 1956 to coordinate, determine and maintain university education standards. It provides recognition to Indian universities and gives funds to government recognized colleges and universities. It has headquarters in New Delhi with 6 regional centers in Bangalore, Bhopal, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune respectively. 

History
UGC was suggested in 1944 and created in 1945 to supervise how Delhi, Aligarh and Banaras, the 3 Central Universities work. The Committee was assigned the task to deal with all the existing Universities in 1947. After freedom, the University Education Commission was formed below the Chairmanship of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan in 1948. Then it was recommended to reconstitute the UGC on general model of United Kingdom’s University Grants Commission.

On 28th December 1953, The UGC (University Grants Commission) was officially opened by late Abul Kalam Azad who was the Minister of Education, Natural Resources and Scientific Research at that time. 

Professional Councils
UGC presently performs NET exam to appoint teachers in universities and colleges. Those, who have M.Phil and teaching experience at Graduation level, and to those who having Ph.D and teaching at Post Graduate level ever since June 2006, have been free from the NET qualification.
