About Institution of Engineers (INDIA)

The Institution of Engineers (INDIA), with over 0.5 million members from 15 engineering disciplines in 99 centres/chapters in India and overseas, is the largest multi-disciplinary engineering professional society in the English speaking world. Based in India, it is one of the full members of the Engineers Mobility Forum. Established in 1920 by Sir Thomas Holland and others at Madras (Chennai), it was formally inaugurated in 1921 by Lord Chelmsford, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India. In 1935, it obtained the Royal Charter of Incorporation from King George V “to promote and advance the science, practice and business of engineering”. Fellows of the Institution of Engineers (India) are entitled to use the post-nominals “FIE”, and all life corporate members are “Chartered Engineers” (CEng).
