About Corporation Bank

Corporation Bank is one of the largest public sector banks. It was established in 1906 and was originated in Udupi, Karnataka. The bank started with only Rs.5000 as its initial capital. In journey of over 100 years it expanded and has grown up into one of major banks in India. Currently it has capital of Rs.1 lakh twenty five crore and has more than 2086 branches in which more than 12,000 employees work. The bank has ATM network next to SBI bank which is second largest in country. Government of India has held its 51.17% of share capital. The bank rolled out its initial public offer in 1997 and now 37.87% of share capital is held by financial institutions as well as public.

The bank’s goal or motto is “Prosperity to All” which is engraved in their logo in Hindi as “Sarve Janah Sukhino Bhavanthu”. It was initially named as Canara Banking Corporation Ltd. and was renamed later. When bank was established, that time was difficult due to two world wars, competition and economic depression, but bank did quite well. It not only survived through all this, but never ceased to grow. In 1972, bank’s name was changed. It was previously Canara Banking Corporation and changed to Corporation Bank Ltd.

Corporation Bank was nationalized along with 5 other banks, in 1980. After bank was established well, its head office was shifted from Udupi to Mangalore. Some major milestones achieved by Corporation Bank are as follows:-

Forbes recognized bank as one of the best companies outside US having assets more than one billion USD.

It was ranked as best public sector bank by Business Today in 2003.

Recognized as Asia’s second strongest and India’s Strongest bank in 2003 by Asian Banker, Singapore.

One of the India’s Best Public Sector Banks award by Business Today in 2006.

The latest achievement achieved by bank is it has implemented core banking in its all branches.
