The Lingaya's University has been named after a great freedom fighter and writer "Late Shri Lingaya Gadde".
After India attained freedom Late Shri Lingaya Gadde devoted the rest of his life in working of the upliftment of the Society. He believed that better citizens could be made by imparting knowledge to them i.e.why he wrote several books on social causes and even translated novels written by Sarat Chandra into his own mother tongue telegu. So that people could understand and appreciate Late Shri Lingaya Gadde's vision Lingaya's Jankalyan Shikshan Sansthan was setup. The society worked upon imparting professional education in Northern India as well as took up the responsibility for developing rural areas.
Setting up of LIMAT in the year 1998 a step towards achiving the mission of Lingaya's Jankalyan Shikshan Sansthan. The University has been setup in a rural area of Haryana. Students who pass with 50% and above in 10+2 or 11+1 or its equivalent (any discipline, awaiting examinations results) are eligible for admission into the program. Admissions are based on the IcfaiUniversity Law Admission Test (ILAT) conducted all over India. In addition scores of Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) and Law School Admission Test (LSAT, India conducted by Pearson, VUE) will also be accepted. Applicant should not be more than 21 years of age as on the date of admission test.

The ICFAI University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand (hereinafter referred to as the University) was established under the ICFAI University Act 2003 (Act No.16 of 2003) passed by the Uttaranchal Legislative Assembly and assented to by the Governor on July 08,2003. The ICFAI University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand is sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (Icfai), a non-profit educational society established in 1984 under the Andhra Pradesh (Telangana Area) Public Societies Registration Act, 1350 F (Act No.1 of 1350F), with the objective of imparting training in finance and management to students, working executives and professionals in India.

The ICFAI University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand is included in the list of universities maintained by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under  Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956, vide their letter No. F.9-26/2003 (CPP-I) dated July 22, 2005. The Distance Education Council (DEC) has approved the programs of the ICFAI University, Dehradun.

Selection of candidates will be done on the basis of GATE score, marks obtained in last qualifying examinations and interview. A valid GATE score is mandatory for grant of scholarship (Rs. 8000/- per month at present) as per AICTE norms, GATE score is not mandatory for sponsored/self financing candidates.
